For something to do in lockdown, and to bring a smile to people, landlord Luke Smith and his partner Penny came up with the idea of painting a giraffe and displaying it in windows to cover the height of the three storey building.

And it sparked a wave of creativity from local children when Luke invited them to come up with a name for the giraffe and send in their own giraffe paintings and drawings.

Luke said: “We now have three large windows covered in local children’s drawings, which is great, please come down and have a look. It makes everything brighter in these troubled times.”

“It was great to give them something to do and make people feel involved.”

The winning name, drawn at random, was Spotty.

Other suggestions included Geraldine, Gerald, Jester, Jeremy and Tally Tall.

Taking about the giraffe, Luke said: “It has certainly had a lot of attention and it was nice to cheer people up.

The giraffe was featured by the Bexhill Town Forum group, which shared a picture, describing it as ‘jolly public artwork’
