This includes what the Old King’s Head would have looked like, and was worked out using two photographs from the mid nineteenth century, a watercolour painting and sketches.

Malcolm Davison, who works for Cuckfield Connections, said: “After more than two years research we have been able to prove that the main Kings Head building famously linked with royal visitors was not where most villagers think it was.

“The inn was a favourite of the Prince Regent who regularly stopped overnight en route to Brighton and was known to have liked the landlord Daniel Dench.

“Research has now shown that the inn was actually a huge sprawling complex, with a very large stable yard (half and acre) for 30 horses behind it and some of the buildings remain to this day. It even had its own farm.”

Malcolm found the original site of the inn and recreated the façade of the old building.

He even used a Middy article from March 1931 about the King’s Head, which mentioned the former location of the inn.

Malcolm said: “Few if any residents have any idea - that the building that is no longer there - was actually the hub of the market town - and a hive of activity and business.

“We are very excited, and believe that this is probably the most significant historical revelation that has been made about the village for a very long time.”
