But, he said, more stringent controls are needed to help stop the spread of the pandemic.

He said: “I very much regret that this is necessary but we must act to keep people safe.

“Allowing the virus to ‘let rip’ would place impossible pressure on our NHS staff and hospitals at their busiest time of the year.

“It would cause preventable deaths - and not just from Covid.

“The good news is that the vaccine programme is rolling out and local people are already being innoculated.

“I had hoped that we could remain in Tier 2 until the vaccine programme was complete. However the virus has evolved and is more infectious. We have to respond.

“The extra restrictions will cause additional economic problems, which the Government is helping to address. However I am yet to see any alternative credible strategy and anyone who thinks the economy could continue ‘as normal’ despite the devastating consequences of this pandemic being allowed to take its course are very much mistaken.”

The new Tier 4 restrictions come into force from Boxing Day. All non-essential shops, hair and beauty salons, indoor gyms and leisure facilities will close.

People must work from home if they can and only travel if absolutely necessary for work, education or essential reasons including to get food or attend a medical appointment.

People cannot mix indoors with anyone they do not live with other than those in their support bubble.

And people can only meet with one other person outdoors, in an open public space.
