Personal training

Now's the moment to cast off those baggy layers and reveal that paunch in all its glory.

The prospect of light summer clothing is a dismal one for some of us - but never fear, there's plenty of time to take action before bikini season really kicks in.

Freedom Leisure is aiming to recruit new members this month and is now offering a new personal training and nutritional advice service in Bexhill before rolling out the same facility in Hastings and Rye.

Membership advisor Nicole White said: "This is giving people the choice about whether they want a lot more support - or just a little."

Paul Chipp is area manager of Focused Individual Training and one of a team of coaches ready to show clients how to make improvements in their health and fitness.

He is currently offering taster sessions for people to give them an idea of what personal training can do for them in terms of both nutritional advice and exercise.

"It is about looking at the whole body rather than just the gym side," said Paul.

"It is a holistic approach.

"Different types of people benefit from personal trainers for different reasons. Some people are very experienced in the gym and just need an extra little push, but other people have never used a gym before, and they need starting slowly at first to build up their confidence more than anything.

"The gym is a scary place for someone who has never been - they have to step out of their comfort zone which is difficult at first.

"I genuinely believe that every single person out there could benefit from a personal trainer in one way or another."

The other F.I.T trainers working at Freedom Leisure are Phil Du Toit, Daniel Aguilera, and Emma Ford.

Paul finds most people he trains want to lose fat, and so the focus is on nutrition, resistance training, cardiovascular training. The fourth important element is the one he can't provide himself - attitude.

He commented: "I can help through motivation...As a personal trainer you have to judge the person in front of you. Some people need to be pushed all they way through the session while others need just a little encouragement.

"As a personal trainer I want to help people - I know it sounds very cliched. But when someone comes to you and after a few weeks sees those measurements go down, see they are losing centimentres round the waist or dropping a dress size, that is a great satisfaction.

"When people start to see results that gives them a massive confidence boost."
