Denise Patterson, high sheriff of West Sussex, said: “The office of high sheriff is over 1,000 years old.

“One of their responsibilities is for the well-being and protection of her majesty’s judges in the county and attending on them in court – indeed, the Judges’ Service has its origins in the Assize Service which always began a judge’s visitation to preside at the Assizes in the county.

“I chose to have my service at Chichester Cathedral as I am a trustee of the Cathedral Restoration and Development Trust, and there were two processions – the mayors and civic leaders of the county and the judges together with the chief constable of police and chief fire officer and visiting high sheriffs of East Sussex and Kent.

“On the steps outside the cathedral were the choir of the Prebendal School.

“My guests included magistrates, representatives from the various charities and voluntary organisations that I have
visited in my year so far
and family and friends from all
over the country.

“The choir were particularly wonderful and the dean gave a considered, moving and interesting sermon which was much remarked upon by all my guests.
