CALLING EVERYONE: who is keen on gardening, baking, floristry and handicrafts to visit the village hall between 10am and midday this Saturday (February 18). All are welcome to go along and chat to members of the Horticultural Society about showing flowers, vegetables, wine, cookery and handicrafts and about membership. You will be given the chance to browse their show schedule and ask any questions you may have about the classes. At the same time you can enjoy a free cup of tea, or coffee, and biscuits. This is a wonderful opportunity to find out about and join the Horticultural Society or renew your membership and collect a show schedule. The cost for adults is £4 under 16's free. Please support this Society as membership and support is really needed to keep this, over 100 year old, Society going.

JUMBLE SALE: in aid of the Horticultural Society takes place at the village hall this Saturday (February 18). The sale starts at 2pm; do go along as there are sure to be lots of bargains, a tombola and refreshments.

TABLE TOP SALE: in aid of St Peter & St James Hospice takes place on Saturday February 25, from 10am till 12.30pm, at the village hall (BN7 3BQ). Entry costs £1 for over 14’s. There will be a wide variety of ‘Tables’ with interesting goodies for sale, refreshments and tombola. For more details call 01273 891256.

SEAFORD WALK: the Footpath Society has a leisurely (four mile) Sunday walk along the sea front on Sunday February 26. The walk will continue on to Lost Village, Splash Point (resting kittiwakes) Tidemills, then the Nature Reserve, Bishopstone and back along seafront. Meet at Splash Point, Seaford Head (Map Ref: 487 982), where there is free seafront parking, ready to start walking at 2pm. ISFIELD WALK: (five miles) meet members of the Footpath Society at Isfield Recreation Ground (Map Ref: 449 175) on Saturday March 11 at 10.30 am. The walk will include White Bridge, Agmonds Wood, Dallas Lane, Blunts Lane, Anchor Inn (for optional lunch) and north along river back to Isfield. LONDON’S LIVERY COMPANIES: is the subject of the Newick & District Decorative and Fine Art Society meeting at the village hall on Tuesday March 14 at 2.15pm. The Livery Companies play a significant part in City life, not least by providing charitable-giving and networking opportunities. The lecturer Joanna Mabutt is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers, who in 1502 formed the Painter-Stainers’ Company which has for over 700 years decorated Royal palaces, coaches and barges, heraldic banners and arms, churches, theatres and buildings (interiors and exteriors), decorations for Midsummer Shows and Lord Mayor’s pageants, funeral banners, portraits, landscapes, clocks, organ pipes, and structures for Court and civic ceremonies. The Company was also involved in the forming of the Royal Academy and has supported education and training of both fine art and decorative painted craftwork for centuries. Joanna is a decorative artist specialising in experimental surface decoration, combining gilding with print and hand painting. She is at present developing ranges of gilded jewellery, fashion and interior accessories. Visitors are always most welcome, £7 on the door with tea and biscuits afterwards and a chance to talk to the speaker. FLOWER CLUB: demonstration is at the village hall on Wednesday March 15 at 7.30pm. The demonstrator will be Angie Hyde. Visitors are most welcome at a cost of £2.50 at the door. There is always a raffle giving a chance to win one of the demonstrators’ arrangements.

INJURED JOCKEYS’ FUND: Raceday at Plumpton Racecourse is on March 27. Gates open at midday with the first race at 2pm and the last race at 5.05pm. Tickets can be purchased on the day for £18. Take advantage of discounted ticket prices by booking in advance at https://plumptonracecourse.cloudvenue.co.uk/. Receive a discount of £3 per person off the gate price of £18 for parties of less than 10 and £5 per person for parties of 10 or more.
