Police wait to talk to lorry crash driver

THE CAUSE of a crash which closed Barnhorn Road for almost 12 hours and nearly cost a man his leg is still being investigated.

A Dutch articulated lorry turned over and careered through hedges, knocking down power lines and trapping the driver and a colleague inside.

They were sharing the route from Holland to Eastbourne, the destination of their 20-ton frozen meat cargo.

The trunk road from Little Common to Eastbourne was blocked from around 6pm last Thursday to 5.30 the following morning.

Twenty firefighters along with police officers were called to the scene - on the bend near the top of Pevensey Marsh Road - to free the two men.

The first casualty was removed and taken to the Conquest Hospital by police helicopter by 6.40pm with suspected fractures, the other trapped for a further two hours.

The driver's leg was "severely trapped" according to assistant divisional fire officer Neal Robinson.

But medical attention and strategic movements by fire fighters saved the driver from the possibility of amputation, thought at one point to be the best way to free him.

He was also taken to the Conquest with fractures.

Sergeant Keith Ellis of Bexhill Road Policing Unit said this week: "The investigation is on-going and we will be interviewing the driver to find out the cause of the accident.

"We will be following potential allegations on the possibility of careless driving."

The drivers were released from the Conquest and on their way home on Wednesday.
