Cyclists swarm Lewes to demand safer walking and cycling spaces – in pictures

More than a hundred bikes swarmed into Lewes on Saturday in protest over provision for pedestrians and cyclists in the town.

Many were colourfully dressed with flags and banners tied to their bicycles. The event was organised by Lewes Extinction Rebellion as part of its campaign to press for government and local councils to reduce CO2 emissions. It was supported by CycleLewes and Lewes Living Streets and the local Green Party. John Webber, of Extinction Rebellion Lewes, said: “Enhancing safety for both cyclists and pedestrians is one of the key needs throughout the town. Only in this way can we hope to encourage more people to leave their cars at home, which will result in cleaner air, quieter streets and a much pleasanter experience for all, whether they are shopping or visiting the town as tourists. In this time of growing awareness of the negative impacts of car use both on local air pollution and on the climate, it is urgent that we make radical changes to encourage everyone to walk and cycle rather than drive wherever possible, and to prioritise the safety of pedestrians and cyclists over the convenience of those in cars.” Sheila O’Sullivan, chairman of CycleLewes, said: “It was very encouraging to see the numbers of cyclists joining the ride on Saturday calling for more safer space for cycling. For too long Lewes has suffered from a lack of investment. It just shows how many of us want a more cycle friendly town for all ages and abilities.” Kevin Moore of Lewes Living Streets added: “The swarm was a great success and we should repeat it regularly until provision for pedestrians and cyclists is improved throughout Lewes.”
