The latest ideas from highways officials are set to be formally issued for consultation in about six months. This means any works around Felpham village centre are likely to take place from Easter next year.

County councillors on the joint western Arun area committee agreed to the new timetable at its March meeting. They also decided to put on hold the previous package of measures after they caused an outcry among residents and traders.

Cllr Paul English, a Felpham parish councillor and Arun councillor for Felpham East, said he expected the consultation to be focused on major aspects such as a mini-roundabout at the Summerley Lane/Felpham Way junction.

“The basic things that have been discussed and consulted over already are likely to proceed as quickly as possible,” he said. “Matters such as the 20mph speed limit have been voted on and approved by a large majority of Felpham residents.”

The intention of the work was to make Felpham safer for everyone and stop Felpham Road being used as a short cut.

“At the moment, the roads are really quiet now the relief road has opened,” said Cllr English. “But that is a novelty and, once it has worn off, people need to have an understanding of what is needed to stop the area being used as a rat run.”

The money for the works is half of the £1m from the developer of the 800 homes on Blakes Mead which was agreed as a result of its planning approval.

In a report to the committee, county council highways and transport director Lucy Monie said: “Proposals include specific traffic management measures to dissuade use of inappropriate speed and improve facilities for pedestrians.”

Going ahead with the ten schemes would risk many of them being considered unacceptable by residents. But scrapping all ten and starting again was unnecessary because many were considered the right ideas even if they were amended.

Proposals set to be changed include altering the Felpham Road/Vicarage Lane junction, a raised table junction at Felpham Road/Limmer Lane, Downview Road traffic calming and a mini-roundabout at Felpham Way/Summerley Lane

Matters such as a pedestrian refuge at Felpham Road/Sea Road, widening the crossing on Felpham Way near Drygrounds Lane and a mini-roundabout at Flansham Lane/Flansham Park are set to be kept in full.
