PORT DEAL NEARS

NEWHAVEN Port and Properties has chosen the developer it wants to take over ownership of the port. NPP has asked Apollo Bannertown to develop proposals.

The firm has been given four months to come up with ideas.

After this, a final decision will be made on the handover of NPP, its assets and the responsibility of the port.

Proposals include guaranteed right of access to Newhaven port for Transmanche Ferries for 25-30 years.

There should also be a significant proposal for building a new ferry terminal; a plan to implement a port access road; renovation of the seaward end of the harbour and renovation of the breakwater.

East Sussex County Council's lead cabinet member for economic development projects, Simon Radford Kirby, has been working closely with NPP and Lewes District Council throughout the decision-making process.

He said: 'This is just the outcome we have been pushing for and is a huge boost for Newhaven and the surrounding area.

'Apollo Bannertown's proposals should bring much-needed investment to the port of Newhaven and guarantee the future of the ferry service. '
