Post Office plan condemned

Councillors have condemned the proposed closure of Slindon Post Office.

A letter about the intended loss of the village facility is to be sent by Arun District Council's policy scrutiny committee.

The committee agreed to recommend to Arun's cabinet that the district council should liaise with Slindon Parish Council to find out the effects of the closure and to express disappointment at the lack of an outreach service to replace the post office.

Councillors also expressed their worries about the closure's impact on elderly and vulnerable residents and their concerns about the criteria used to determine the closure.

Members decided at Tuesday's meeting to protest about the possible loss of the service in the village.

Committee chairman Cllr Dennis Wilde said before the meeting: "We know that in some areas, particularly rural villages, the post office is a vital part of the community.

"It is important we give careful consideration to the impact of any proposed closures."

The fate of post offices around Bognor Regis will be announced in late January.
