Proud to fly the (blue) flag

TOURISM chiefs are celebrating after Littlehampton was awarded the prestigious European Blue Flag for its safe, clean beach and bathing waters, the only major seaside resort in the whole of Sussex given the honour.

Arun District Council chairman Dr James Walsh raised the flag over the promenade on Friday, as the council's tourism manager Richard Edwards summed up its significance.

"The award of Littlehamp-ton's first ever European Blue Flag is a tremendous boost for tourism in the town's 150th anniversary year, coinciding with the completion of the multi-million pound East Bank redevelopment and the opening two weeks ago of the new Look and Sea! visitor centre," said Mr Edwards.

Assessors vetted the beach, bathing waters and visitor facilities against 27 tough standards and, as well handing Littlehampton its first Blue Flag, they gave the resort the seaside flag for the Seaside Award for the 11th consecutive year.

Added Mr Edwards: "All the forecasts suggest English resorts are going to have a bumper year in 2003 and I'm sure these flags will ensure Littlehampton shares in that."

Littlehampton mayor David Dyball and the town's MP Nick Gibb were among guests at the flag raising ceremony, where Arun cabinet members Oliver Wingrove and Stephen Brookman hoisted the Seaside Award flag.
