£1million station revamp

A £1million revamp of tatty Bexhill Station was announced this week.

Network Rail revealed repairs to glazing work on the station's ramps and overbridge will start in July and should be finished by December.

Scaffolding went up on Sunday in preparation for the work - part of a series of steps Network Rail and South Central Trains have agreed to carry out after reaching an agreement with Rother District Council.

In September, the local authority issued an enforcement notice against the rail companies, demanding an extensive renovation of the town centre eyesore.

The bodies reached a compromise deal after an appeal against the notice, stating the cost of the scheme was too high and insufficient time had been given to carry out the work.

Rother District Council Leader, Cllr Graham Gubby, said he was 'delighted' improvements to the station had begun.

"As I have said for many months we are determined to make a difference to the town."

"It's definitely a start but they also need to look at staffing levels at the station and other things."
