Pupils talk rubbish

BEXHILL students got to talk a load of rubbish at Rother District Council recently.

Pupils were invited to the Town Hall under the banner of the Bexhill School's Consortium to find out more about waste and recycling.

The day forms part of an ongoing programme to inform schools how Rother delivers its services to residents.

Students from all eight of Bexhill's primary schools were given the opportunity to take part in games and pose questions to Rother's recycling officer Fergus Cameron, following a presentation.

Representatives from East Sussex County Council's Environmental Action Team tested the youngsters with a Power Point quiz and held another competition where recycled goods were used to help answer questions.

The children were encouraged to follow the rules of;

*Refusing unnecessary packaging or goods that create excessive rubbish.

*Reducing the amount of waste they create.

*Re-using items where possible.

*Recycling as a final step and knowing how to go about it.

Pupils were given a re-useable Rother bag to take home and use on future shopping trips. They were also encouraged to tell their parents about the lessons they learned on the day.

Rother District Council chief executive Derek Stevens, chairman Cllr Joanne Gadd and leader Cllr Carl Maynard were also on hand to answer any questions the youngsters had about the Council.

Cllr Maynard said: "It was encouraging to see all the pupils and the part they are playing in reducing waste in the district.

"By inviting schools in to the council chamber, they can learn about the good work Rother is doing, how the Council functions and how we go about delivering services to our residents."

Rother District Council policy officer Scott Lavocah, who arranged the visit, said: "This is part of an ongoing scheme to build strong links with schools across the district and we look forward to engaging with more schools in the future."
