Rag triumph pulls in record cash amount

This year's RAG race in Bognor Regis has been declared the most successful ever.

The final takings of the annual event by students at the University of Chichester topped 3,000.

No other fundraising day organised by the university's Students' Union has raised so much money.

The race has been held for more than 20 years with the RAG denoting raising and giving.

It sees hundreds of fancy dress costumes brighten up the town centre. Life-size toy soldiers, human monkeys and a trio of Mexican cowboys were among the characters seen around the area.

Takings from the latest race are going to the Moving Forward charity and its Portsmouth-based work on behalf of some 1,500 amputees and wheelchairs users across Hampshire and West Sussex.

Students' union president Alvin Ramsamy said: "This year's RAG run was a fantastic success.

"We've received some great feedback from both those who took part and local residents who enjoyed the change of scenery. Best of all, we were able to raise a huge sum of money to help such a worthy cause."

The race sees as many students as possible don fancy dress and make their way round Bognor via participating pubs and clubs while raising money for the Students' Union's adopted cause.

Premises which took part in this year's race were: The Prince of Wales, The Richmond Arms, The Railway, The Station, The Lamb Inn, The Berkeley Arms, QEII, The Steyne, Club Vision, Mud Club, The Unicorn, Hatters, Shine, Oceans, Subway and Kebab Express.
