Rodmell and Southease

SNOWDROPS: The snowdrops are now coming out everywhere and I see that Adrian Orchard has mentioned in our parish magazine, that Southease churchyard will soon have its spectacular display of these dainty white flowers.

B&B: I recently went to Lewes Town and Country B&B Group’s Brochure 2016 launch at the Beechwood Hall, Cooksbridge. I had not been to this hall before and I thought it was rather splendid. Instead of having an evening affair, this year we had a lovely buffet lunch with an interesting talk and film show on The Priory of St Pancras, Priory Park, Lewes. Let’s hope we can work along the same lines next year. Thanks go to all of those people who work so hard for Lewes Town and Country B&B Group, it has gone from strength to strength and its brochures can now be obtained in Lewes Tourism Office.

SO SAD: I was so sad when I heard that Sir Terry Wogan had died, as I listened to his lovely Irish lilt on the morning radio programme for years. I am a bit puzzled as to why nothing has been heard from his morning buddy, with whom he often joked, Sarah Kennedy, whose programme used to follow on and I also loved to hear her. Has she also departed this world I wonder? There used to be much banter going on about horse racing and Sarah’s scuba diving holidays in the Maldives. I was so light hearted it used to set me up for the day.

QUIZ: Our pub is going to have another great Quiz Evening, in aid of our local hospice, on March 4. As soon as I get details I will pass them on. It’s so lovely to have so much going on in our village.

FACE-LIFT: Our pub is having a face-lift at the moment, ready for the summer season, which from the amount of bookings coming in for B&B’s looks as though it will be busy.

BIRDS: I am not getting any starlings, thrushes or wrens in the garden at the moment, despite having put up another bird table and more bird feeders. I suspect we have a sparrow hawk in the area as well as an increase in cats. For years the jackdaws, collared doves and blackbirds have lined up on the fence in the morning for breakfast, along with a splendid cock pheasant. I very rarely see them now.

BIRTHDAY PARTY: I recently attended my best friend’s father’s 103rd birthday party. There were about 40 people there and Fred enjoyed every minute of it. He is a remarkable man who was badly injured in the war which left him lame. This did not stop him doing anything and he was still driving until about 98 years old. Up until recently he was up a ladder painting his house and put a new roof on his summer house. He still lives alone and keeps his house like a palace. He has had a few falls recently but does not let that bother him. His mind is still bright as a button and he dresses in fashion. A most remarkable man. We used to laugh at the fact that when he drove, he did his shopping at 2am and the shop staff loved him. To them he was a true character.
