Scouts step out to mark St George's Day

THE SUN was shining on almost 650 Scouts in Arundel on Sunday (April 26), for a festive celebration of the nation's patron saint.

The annual St George's Day parade, organised this year by the 4th Littlehampton Scout Group who carried the district colours, brought crowds and traffic in Arundel to a standstill, as residents and visitors alike lined the streets to watch the gathered Beaver, Cubs and Scouts walk from the castle to the cathedral, and back, to a soundtrack provided by Scout and Nautical Training Corps (NTC) bands.

During a special service at the cathedral, the six to 25 year olds renewed their Scouts' Promise, and led a camp fire sing-song, before members of Littlehampton's NTC pledged their Code of Honour.

Millions of Scouts were involved in similar events across the country on Sunday, as part of the celebrations.

Julie Dixon, district commissioner, said: "This event helps the young people realise that they are part of a world-wide movement and that all Scouts share the same promise, wherever they are."

Earlier in the day, more than 100 Beavers and Cubs, aged eight to 12, were presented with Chief Scout Awards by Arundel's mayor, Wendy Eve, during a special reception held at the cathedral. All those gaining the accolade had completed working towards it during the last year.
