Showground showcase for talented youngsters

TALENTED local young people are invited to showcase their skills in a craft competition.

The prestigious Young Craftsman of the Year Competition takes place annually at the South of England Show and is open to young people aged 14-21 living or studying in East and West Sussex, Kent, Berkshire and Hampshire.

There are categories for ceramics, metalwork, textiles, design and technology and wood.

Total prize money is in excess of 4,500 with a first prize of 1,000.

Now in its 21st year, the competition, run by the South of England Agricultural Society, has traditionally nurtured talent and acted as a launch pad for careers in craftsmanship, design and technology.

Past prize-winning items have included an innovative fence post extractor, metal gate, carved cabinet, felt jacket and ceramic pot.

Closing date for entries is Saturday, April 14 and work must be submitted by Monday, June 4.
