Young skaters have been working with the project team from the start and have had a big say in the design of the skatepark. They have also been busy raising money for extra facilities.

Local skateboarding group Every Skater Lives (ESL), which is made up of local teenagers who have also become involved in breakdancing, is to have its logo engraved on a ramp surface.

Group member Jo Parker-Harding commented to the Herald: "This is what I have been waiting for ever since I started skating.

"I am well happy."

One member of the community who has been involved from the start is Mel Shaw.
