Smart junior wardens are playing their part

New junior wardens have been presented with uniforms for their role as the eyes and ears of a Bognor Regis school.

The 17 volunteers received the clothing, such as baseball caps and high-visibility jackets, in a special assembly at Laburnum Grove Junior School with Arun District Council chairman Cllr Ashvin Patel. He also handed them a goodie bag each.

The wardens, who are supported by the council, will work with local police community support officer Julie Jones to learn about social responsibility, good citizenship and respect.

Their role is to spot any minor anti-social behaviour around their school and its neighbourhood. This includes littering, dog fouling, graffiti and fly-tipping.

The seven to 11-year-olds will record the incidents in a notebook they will carry with them rather than intervene.

The details will be emailed to Arun's clean and safe team for action.

The junior wardens will get involved in special projects, such as community clean-ups, as well.

This is the third year the school has taken part in the scheme. Headteacher Pip Otton said: "The children are very proud of their school and enjoy litter picking and caring for the school grounds.

"They are also keen to help keep their local streets and parks safe.

"These children are our future and, with their support and involvement, vandalism and anti-social behaviour will diminish and Bognor will became an even more attractive and lovely place."

Cllr Patel, who spoke to the children before the assembly, was impressed by what they had to say.

"It was lovely to hear the children talking about their new roles with such enthusiasm.

"They are really looking forward to helping keep their environment safe, not only for the community but for the local wildlife as well," he said.
