Special needs project at Chantry

BUILDING contractor Rok joined staff, pupils and the deputy county school improvement chief at Chantry Primary School on Tuesday.

The occasion was the opening of a new special needs group room.

The purpose-built activity room replaces former cramped facilities for special needs pupils aged five to 11.

Pupils will now be taught in a 35 square metre classroom, built to resemble the Victorian architecture of the Barrack Road school. The room has been equipped with new furniture and special educational needs learning resources.

The contractors have also created new disabled toilets, a ramp to enable full access to the new classroom and have completely rebuilt the school's Key Stage one toilets.

Chairman of governors Simon Allen cut a ribbon at the at the 220-pupil school on Tuesday to declare the classroom open.
