Speed camera for blacksport?

A SPEED camera could be used to help kill motorists speed at a Seaford accident black spot.

Over the years Seaford Town Council members have called for a wide range of measures to slow traffic entering the town.

Now Cllr Rosemary Collict is suggesting a camera be sited on the A259 near the Bishopstone turn-off to stop the regular accidents on the fast stretch between Newhaven and Seaford.

In July a 35-year-old man was killed in a three-car-crash which blocked the road for nearly five hours.

Cllr Collict said: That particular area is one I feel very strongly about, there has been a procession of accidents.

When I was on holiday in the midlands everywhere we went there were notices warning of speed cameras. If you look at this area there are none until you get to the fringes of Brighton.

There seems to be everything to encourage people to charge along that stretch of road and very little to reduce speed and accidents.

New guidelines which allow police to keep cash raised from fines have raised concerns that speed cameras are more about money-making than road safety. However, cameras can only be sited at locations which have had eight accidents within the previous three years.

Councillors were due to discuss possible sites for the cameras at a meeting at the Downs Leisure Centre last night.

The proposal will then be passed on to East Sussex County Council for its consideration.
