In a statement, his speedway club Eastbourne Eagles, say that Lewis remains strongly repentant following the events of that evening and the role he played.

The statement adds: "Although the club regrets the involvement of one of their riders in such an incident they would like to add that in their view, Lewis's actions are completely out of character.

"They are at pains to point out that he will receive their full support throughout this difficult period.

"They are hopeful the court can take into account his previous good character and the fact that this is his first offence and what they consider a 'moment of madness' by the teenager will not be allowed to blight what is widely regarded as a highly promising future in the sport."
