To ensure everyone was involved, there was also a 20p penalty for every sand shot taken throughout the day, and the competition was followed by a grand raffle.

Derek Atherton, a SSAFA Forces Help fund-raiser from East Preston, thanked all those who donated prizes for both the golf and the raffle, and in particular the Hilton Avisford Park Hotel at Walberton and the Lamb Inn at Rustington, as well as the golf course owner Richard Stillwell, for hosting the event and presenting the trophies and prizes.

The £616 raised by the event will assist volunteers in the SSAFA Forces Help Chichester/Arundel Division to help and support people who serve in the armed forces, those who used to serve, and their families.

Said Derek: “One day’s paid service in any of our armed forces is all that is needed to qualify for assistance from SSAFA Forces Help – this includes those who serve in our reserve forces and anyone who did National Service as well as close relatives, widows and widowers.

“SSAFA provides support that is practical, financial or emotional.”
