Sunday - its the big marathon

Local MP Michael Foster will officially get things underway at 9.30am - with the first runners expected to reach the finish line by noon.

The MP will be kitted out in special 1908 clothes to commemorate 100 years since the first marathon was run in 1066 Country. And, just like his 1908 counterpart, not only will Mr Foster start the race but he has also donated a trophy for the winner.

The race takes place this Sunday (December 14) and the gruelling course will take in Hastings, St Leonards, Battle and Bexhill.

Before the start the band of the 1066 Pipes and Drums will perform outside the town hall and there is a host of entertainment being laid on for the crowds waiting for the runners to return to the finish line.

There will be an Arrow FM roadshow throughout the day in the town centre, as well as Punch and Judy Shows at 11.30am and 2pm in Priory Meadow.

A Victorian fairground organ and ride will also be on hand to wow residents and elsewhere there will be traditional chestnut and flower sellers and people dressed as 1908 policemen on bicycles.

Local amateur dramatic society The Hastleons and the Salvation Army will also be in the town to keep the crowds' spirits up.

A full commentary on the race will also be provided before the first runners start trickling back to Hastings, with the last expected by 4pm.
