Surfers Against Sewage set to clean up town's beaches

An environmental pressure group is to clean the beach at St Leonards as part of a nationwide initiative.

Surfers Against Sewage is a national project, split into regions, each with a representative. Their aim is to raise awareness for reef pollution and try to reduce it.

Colin Darbyshire, SAS representative for Hastings and St Leonards, said: “I have been part of the group for two years. I get more and more people involved every time we do a beach clean.”

The beach clean is based solely on the help of volunteers and attracts a lot of attention, with more than 100 people believed to be taking part in this year’s clean in St Leonards.

Mr Darbyshire said: “It’s predominantly about trying to reduce reef pollution by cleaning, but there are lots of other campaigns involved.”

The clean up is also about taking pride in the beach at St Leonards and making it look nicer for the community.

Mr Darbyshire added: “We will pick up everything from stuff off shipping containers, that can be harmful to dogs, to lolly sticks.”

Amber Rudd, MP for Hastings and Rye, said: “I am proud that Hastings and Rye has some of the best beaches in the country, with Marina Beach and Pelham Beach both recipients of Seaside Awards and with Marina also awarded a Blue Flag.

“Beach cleans such as this and the one I organised in March this year make a valuable difference to our area, protecting its rich marine environment and allowing visitors to better enjoy our beautiful coastline.”

The beach clean will take place on October 23 from 11am until 1pm. The event is free to join. Gloves and bin bags will be provided.
