Tone Zone boosts their fitness plan in Felpham

More people are being given the chance to get fit for life in Felpham.

The Tone Zone gym in the Arun Leisure Centre is expanding its exercise referral programme.

This will enable extra residents who suffer from a range of conditions such as obesity, diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure and mild depression to gain the benefits of a modest work out.

Neil Croft, the gym's fitness manager, said he was enthusiastic about the benefits of the scheme, which is aimed at people who would normally shun a leisure centre.

"Our scheme has developed with the development of our facilities. We now operate two studios and the clients can train as a group in circuit sessions or use the main studio when it suits them."

The Tone Zone has been running its exercise referral scheme since 1997. Those who take part are referred by their GP to a specially trained exercise professional. A consultation follows after which the individual is given a specific exercise programme aligned to their condition.

More than 600 patients have been taken on. At least six out of ten of them have completed their ten weeks of sessions. Success stories have included lowering blood pressure and changing people breathless from climbing stairs into Bognor Prom 10k runners.

As part of the scheme's expansion, the Wright Foundation is holding a course leading to its nationally recognised exercise referral qualification to ensure staff know about a range of medical conditions.

The course will take place between November 10 and 14. It is open to all exercise and health professionals.
