Traditioonal sweet shop reopens in Bognor

One of the town's oldest businesses has re-emerged and anyone with a sweet tooth will more than likely be making a beeline for it.

The former Herrington's confectionery shop in Chichester Road '“ which dates back to the 1930s '“ has now reopened as Parbright Stores.

Its new manager Shaun Bright says the store has already attracted fantastic feedback from customers who are eager to see if its pick 'n' mix delights measure up to the offerings of old.

"It's fantastic to be opening up an old business that has not been used for years.

"I really want to take this place back to its roots and will be looking to stock as many traditional sweets as I can and already have 60 varieties," said the retailer, who is based in Yapton.

He believed the demise of Woolworths last year meant traditional sweet shops were now enjoying something of a revival across the country.

"I've had some great comments from people including a woman who came in and said that the store had saved her life back in the 1930s.

"She had a bad cough then and it used to stock all kinds of things including the medicine she needed, so she was glad the shop was open again," said Mr Bright, a former fishmonger and chef who moved to the area several years ago from London.

He revealed he had been made to feel very welcome with his new business venture.

His father in-law, David Deadman, who owns the site including the car garage next door, added: "The site has been a shop for about 100 years and was kept in the same family.

"It started as a sweet shop in a front room and I hope that all these years later it is going to continue being a success."
