All lanes on major Sussex road stopped due to car fire

All lanes on a major road in Sussex were stopped and queueing traffic was seen following a car fire, the AA said.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said it was called at 3.47pm on Saturday, June 17, to reports of a vehicle on fire on the A23 southbound between Hickstead and Muddleswood.

Joint fire control mobilised fire engines from Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath to the scene along with an East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service crew.

Upon arrival crews found the vehicle well-alight, and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus brought the blaze under control using two high pressure hose reels.

At 4.39pm Sussex Police said: “A23 southbound at Sayers Common is currently down to one lane whilst West Sussex Fire Brigade deal with this. We will the have to await recovery and Highways to attend to inspect the road surface. Apologies for the inconvenience.”

Around an hour later officers said the road had completely reopened.

Police are not appealing for any further information at this time.
