Handcross man dies in Burgess Hill traffic accident

A 20-year-old Handcross man has died after his car left the B2036 near Burgess Hill and hit a tree in the early hours of this morning (Sunday January 27).

The Volkswagen Golf was spotted by another driver shortly after 3.30am, but police believe that the crash may have happened some time before that.

Sergeant Stewart Goodwin from the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit said: “The vehicle had cooled down when we arrived, so I believe that it could have left the road some time earlier. We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the car off the B2036 Cuckfield Road at any time before 3.30am.

“It has been necessary for us to close the road while rescue and recovery work takes place and Highways will need to clean the road before we are able to re-open it. I should like to thank people living locally and other users of the road for their patience and understanding while this is carried out.”

The road has remained closed this morning (Sunday).

Anyone who saw the car driving in the area or off the road where it crashed is asked to call Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Southcott or email [email protected].
