MARY GOLDSMITH: Those of you who knew Bert Goldsmith’s wife, Mary, will be sad to hear that after a long illness she died peacefully last Wednesday morning, November 11. During her illness she had been very well cared for in the Downlands Nursing Home, Silver Hill. She and Bert had been married for 68 years, 55 of them in their home in Lower Cross, among the first tenants there in fact. I don’t yet know when her service at Hastings Crematorium will be, but by the time you read this Ellis Brothers of Rye may know the date and time. Their phone number is 01797 222394.

CHURCH SERVICES: In St Mary’s this Sunday Holy Communion will be celebrated at 8am, Evening Prayer at 6pm.

GRAND CHRISTMAS FAYRE: There will be a warm welcome for everyone at this great annual community event, in the Hall next Saturday morning, November 28, from 10.30am till 12.30pm. On the many stalls there will be home-made Christmas cakes and puddings, preserves and confectionery, costume jewellery, quite recently published books, best quality bric-a-brac, new to you (gifts received and items purchased but never actually used), small furniture items and a children’s section selling toys, puzzles, games and books. If you are willing to donate any of the above items for sale, it would be a great help if you could bring them to the Hall the previous afternoon (Friday) between 2pm and 4pm (otherwise bring them along when the sale opens). Prizes for the Grand Raffle to Nan Hacking, please. Tombola prizes to Ann Barker (by Friday afternoon, please, to allow time for numbering).

BACKA QUACKA: At 11.30am next morning (Sunday November 29) there will be a fundraising duck race, like last year’s very successful race on the Tillingham, but this time on the Brede, and afterwards at The Plough. A time to note in your diary if you don’t want to miss the fun. Meanwhile, for £5 tickets to back a duck (or ducks) please apply to Robert Wheeler (01797 222009) or The Plough (01797 223381). Prizes for the first ten ducks home include £100 for the winner and £50 for the duck coming in second. More details next week.
