Update: Two found dead in Bognor flat

Police were called to the basement flat at around 3.40pm yesterday (Friday, 12) when the bodies of a man, 51, and a woman, 30 were discovered.

An eye witness, who lives on Park Road, said he saw about seven cars pull up outside the house in the afternoon, with police officers and a hazardous response team attending the scene.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said the deaths are currently being treated as unexplained and at this stage, not suspicious.

Officers said there was a concern there was an indication of chemical substances related to one or other of the bodies.

The property has been rechecked and Sussex Police said there is no evidence of noxious substances or pollution.

No one else was evacuated from the property.

The bodies were removed from the flats yesterday (Friday,12)..

One resident who lives two floors above the basement flat in Park Road, said: “It is absolutely shocking. We didn’t know who they were as we go in through different doors.

“The neighbours below us are the only people we really see.

“My partner arrived home and called me saying there was something going on.

“I didn’t arrive home until later. It was only up to the point where the funeral directors arrived did we realise there was a body.

“It’s so sad.”

The police asked the Park Road resident if she had heard any noise or disturbance.

“We didn’t hear anything, we were out.”

No one else the Observer spoke to seemed to know the residents of the basement flat.

A PCSO was at the scene throughout the evening and overnight.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said more information should be released tomorrow, after the post mortem is complete.
