Villagers take on abseil for school and church fund

Twenty seven abseilers have scaled the heights of Guildford Cathedral to raise money for the Ewhurst parish church and village infant school.

The team of all ages first climbed the 249 steps to the angel on the top of the landmark building and parish rector David Minns was one of the first to start the descent.

He was joined by bell ringer Rob Matthews and assistant minister Tricia Hislop.

Rev Minns of Ewhurst’s St Peter and St Paul CofE Church said: “I was anxious about it beforehand. I tried not to think about it. There’s that moment when you’ve got to put your feet over the edge.

“Once you have done that and trusted the wires, you can just enjoy it. It was great to raise money in such a nice way.”

The youngest person to brave the wire was eight-year-old Sophie Pitts-Tucker, who set off with her sister, Rosie, 13, and brother Freddie, ten.

Governor of Ewhurst CofE Infant School Bob Arnold also made it a family affair, by going down with his daughter Victoria.

The money raised will be used to refurbish parts of the school and paths in the churchyard to make them safer.
