We meet the PM

CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save services at the Conquest have met PM Tony Blair this afternoon, Wednesday.

The delegation spent 20 minutes telling him why Hastings and 1066 Country needs to keep its A&E, and also its maternity unit and other vital services.

This was the delegation:

- Hastings MP Michael Foster

- Observer Group Editor Peter Lindsey

- Hastings mayor, councillor Maureen Charlesworth

- Hastings councillor Jeremy Birch, PCT member

- Margaret Williams and John Baker, Hands off the Conquest.

Mr Blair was told of the main reasons why Hastings needs vital health services.

These included:

- the poor roads system

- Hastings is one of the poorest towns in the country

- travelling to neighbouring holidays could mean the loss of lives

- the strength of local feeling against such changes

- regeneration.

The delegation handed the PM a petition which has been signed

by 40,000 people.

He was also given copies of the Hastings Observer which reported on the huge march involving 7,000 local residents.

Mr Blair said at the end of the day the decision would be made by the Strategic Health Authority.

He could give no promises and admitted there were concerns all over the country.

He said there must be centres of excellence developed, but acknowledged there were times when people need to be near to A&E.

He pledged to keep an eye on the matter.
