Wealden signs up on climate change

Wealden District Council has signalled its intent to tackle climate change by signing the Nottingham Declaration.

Council leader Nigel Coltman said: 'It's called the Nottingham Declaration following a conference of local government leaders in that city, but it's as much to do with Hailsham, Crowborough, Uckfield, Heathfield and Polegate, and their surrounding villages as anywhere else in Britain.

'We are committed to achieving a significant reduction in the greenhouse gas emissions created by Wealden by what we do.

'This includes travel, waste collection and the goods and services we use.

'We've already made progress with our office energy use. All the electricity used by Wealden's Pine Grove and Vicarage Lane offices is now matched by production from a carbon-neutral source, hydroelectric power.

'We want to encourage local households, organisations and businesses to start to adapt their own energy use. Details about what can be done are found on the Council's website www.wealden.gov.uk.'
