Westergate woman does walk in aid of mouth cancer charity

A Westergate woman who lost her mother to mouth cancer will be raising awareness of the illness and raising money for charity when she takes part in a sponsored walk in London.

Jemma Robinson, 30, from Westergate will be taking part in the 10km walk organised by the Mouth Cancer Foundation on Saturday, September 26 in Hyde Park.

The disease kills someone every three hours in the UK and kills one out of every two people diagnosed as a result of late detection.

Jemma will be doing the walk with her husband Adrian and three-year-old daughter Hope to raise the profile of this common form of the disease.

It is the first time Jemma has taken part in the event, and her team will be called Anna's Angels, in memory of her mother Anna who died three years ago at the age of 52.

Jemma, a pharmacy technician at Worthing Hospital, said: "It will be nice to raise awareness because so many people don't realise they suffer from mouth cancer, because it's a very under-publicised cancer.

"If you get mouth cancer in the early stages its treatable but many cases aren't diagnosed in the early stages.

"Although I have some medical knowledge, I didn't know the ins and outs and how you can get it. It will be nice to raise some money for the charity. It takes place the day before my mother's birthday, so it's fate that we should do it.

"My daughter Hope was only ten weeks old when my mother died. Hope will never know her Nanny and I want to raise funds and awareness so that this will prevent another little girl or boy missing out on the love of a grandparent as my daughter has."

Jemma's mother was diagnosed with mouth cancer in summer 2004 and was given a terminal prognosis in 2005.

Before she died she did all the things she wanted to including taking a helicopter ride and visiting her native country, Poland. At the event, specialists will be carrying out free mouth cancer screening, and prizes will be awarded to top individual and team fundraisers.
