SUMMER FAIR: Tomorrow, Saturday, at St Wilfrids Church Hall, Broad Road. From 10am to noon. Various stalls including cakes, coffee and tea, also bacon sandwiches. All welcome.

A CONCERT: The Downland Singers presented their summer concert entitled Thank-you for the Music at Trinity Church. It was an excellent afternoon of music under the direction of Jennie, and accompanied by Alastair Macfadyen. The programme was well-planned with something to suit all tastes, ranging from the classical style of Handel and Ketelbey through to The Beatles, ABBA plus a selection of songs from the shows. Visitors attending for the first time were truly impressed, by the high standard of all taking part. The choir has some new voices and the male singers enhanced and blended well with the ladies. Everyone appreciated the soloists, especially Sally and Reg, who delighted us with a duet from Les Miserables, they really captured the mood. Alastair’s hearty rendition on the organ of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue, a great favourite of many, was much enjoyed.

The ladies proved that they were also multi-talented, not only could they sing well, but they had baked superb cakes, which provided welcome refreshments during the interval.

All too soon the choir were paying a tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, for her 90th Birthday, by singing two well-chosen pieces to mark the occasion, and then it was time for the finale Thank-you for the Music which summed up the afternoon’s entertainment perfectly. It was obvious the choir all enjoyed the afternoon as much as the audience who left for home with a lighter step. The choir are now enjoying their summer break but you can find out more by visiting their website: http://downlandsingers.webplus.net/ or their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/downlandsingers/
