Winchelsea cellar tours in New Year

Special tours of Winchelsea’s medieval vaulted cellars have been arranged over the New Year.

Winchelsea boasts more than 50 medieval cellars, a number rivalled only by Bristol, Norwich and Southampton.

Most of the vaulted cellars were built around 1290-1300, at the same time as the town.

Experienced guides from the Winchelsea Archaeological Society (WAS) will explain how and why the cellars were built as well as something of the history of the Ancient Town and Cinque Port.

The cellar tours will start from the Town Well in Castle Street at 11am on Monday December 28 and 2pm on Saturday January 2.

The steps to the cellars are steep and sensible footwear is advised.

The cost of the tour is £5 and includes a guidebook to the cellars.
