Woman, 83, is third crash victim

THE THIRD major traffic crash in the town in a month has killed an 83-year-old woman from Bexhill.

The pedestrian, from Collington Avenue, was involved in a collision with a silver Renault at the Birkdale junction of Collington Avenue early on Wednesday afternoon.

The 18-year-old woman driver and her passenger, both from Bexhill, escaped uninjured but suffering shock.

Police received the emergency call at 2.48pm and were on the scene within minutes.

Officers from the Bexhill-based Road Policing Unit closed the road while a full crash investigation was carried out.

The road was reopened at 5.20pm.

The tragedy was the second fatal accident on the road within two weeks.

An 85-year-old man died at the eastern end of Collington Avenue after a collision with a car (see page 5).

And in August, 53-year-old Hastings man Barry King died in a motorcycle accident on Little Common Road.

Sergeant Keith Ellis of the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit is heading the investigation into the latest accident.

Sgt Ellis said: "Anybody who witnessed the collision between the silver hatchback and the pedestrian at the junction who hasn't already spoken to the police, should come forward quoting 'Operation Verge'."
