Worthing man fined for parking across own drive

A WORTHING father has said he is disgusted after he received a fine for parking across his driveway.

Wil White, 34, of Winchester Road, could not believe it when he saw a traffic warden prepare a parking ticket after he briefly moved his car across his driveway where there is a single yellow line.

He said the reason he parked there briefly was so people could access the communal bin store on his driveway without damaging his car.

"The yellow line is there to protect me," he said. "I am fined for parking in front of my own driveway.

"I moved back to Worthing a year ago after living in Brighton. Brighton is pretty hot on parking tickets but it is even worse here."

When Wil saw he was getting a ticket he rushed out with his six-month old daughter to speak to the warden.

With no-one else in the house and no baby seat in the car, he was unable to move his vehicle quickly enough to avoid the fine.

Spokeswoman for Worthing Borough Council, Wendy Knight, said the single yellow line did mean no parking was allowed between 9am and 6pm Monday to Saturday, except bank holidays.

She added: "The civil enforcement officer would not have been aware who the vehicle belonged to and the yellow line applies to all motorists, including any resident that may have applied for the restriction in the first place."

She said if Wil felt he had sufficient grounds for appeal, he should follow the instructions on the reverse of the fine.
