32-0! That's the Sunday League record ... or is it?

32-0! That's the latest count in the quest to find the highest-ever score in the Lewes & District Sunday League.

A fortnight ago the Newhaven Railway Club beat Eastbourne Albion 24-0 in a division one fixture when Albert Hanigoie scored six times.

Sunday League records are a bit sketchy but results secretary Nick Stevenson told the Express last week that the Kings Head (Cuckfield) had suffered a 28-0 beating by Brighton side AFC Glynde some years ago.

However, it turns out that's not the record. Uckfield resident Ian Maynard contacted the Sussex Express this week and told us of a game he played in for Buxted in the Sunday League that ended 32-0. Again it was the poor old Kings Head on the receiving end.

The 44-year-old Maynard, who played for Buxted both Saturdays and Sundays in many positions bar goalkeeper for some 20 years, cannot remember the date or year of the game but turned up a newspaper cutting from the Express.

It recorded the match was a division four fixture and that Maynard netted a hat-trick. The other scorers were Adrian Cornford (eight), Andy Britton (six), Dave Thomsett (four), Robert Hall (three), Pat Wager (three) Trevor Greenwood (two), Steve Winter (two) and an own goal.

'It was a bit of a walkover,' was the understated comment of a club official.

So the record score seems to be 32-0 '¦ but let us know if you know better!
