Action packed day at Angmering raceway

THE summer season got underway in fine rubber-burning style at Angmering raceway on Sunday March 22 when the Junior Rods, A and B Production, Modified C, Production Stox and Saloon Rod formulas provided an action-packed day of racing under blue skies and hot sunshine.

With the banked oval dried out from the last of the winter rains to date, the drivers were able to apply full power without fear of spinning out and meeting Angmering's very unforgiving safety fence.

That is not to say that a few drivers did not come to grief as racing incidents tend to be a little more dramatic when the cars are travelling at full clip as one BMW Saloon Rod driver found out, almost requiring a pilot's licence rather than a racing item as he became airborne before landing in a precarious position and bringing out the red flags to halt the race.

Most of the drivers managed to keep their racing cars on the tarmac with victory in the final Junior Prod going to 188, Billy Page and 28, Craig Cooper in the Junior Rods.

There were wins in Prod A and Prod B formulas for 336, Ryan Lilleywhite and 99, Chris Philips respectively, while the silverware went to 91, Mike Stocker in Modified Saloons.

676, Phil Young took the 1600 Front Wheel Drive win, with 44, John Sayers doing the same in the Hot Rods. The nudge and spin Bangers ended their day with a race that turned into a demolition derby, with 57, Joe Brown crawling from the wreckage to take the win.

The powerful rear-wheel-drive Saloon Rods tore up the track with a final win for 146, Shaun Noble, while 410, Les Croucher did the honours for the front-wheel-drive Rods.

The Classic Stock Cars were also in action, treating fans to some real blast from the past racing action. 70, Paul Parsons took the final.

The next day of racing action and general automotive mayhem is on Bank Holiday Monday, April 13, with the incredible Caravan racing, ladies production stock car race, and reverse racing (which has to be seen to believed) from the nudge and spin Bangers.
