Bexhill let lead slip

BEXHILL United's unbeaten run in 2003 continued, but that will have been tinged by the disappointment of letting a 3-2 lead against visitors Storrington slip late on.

United manager Len Watkins was philosophical about the 3-3 result: "At the end of the day it was a fair result. We were very anxious in the first half - our passing was very, very poor and we gave away two soft goals. But in the second half we came out with all guns blazing."

Storrington took an early lead when Neil Cheek misjudged Bridle's free kick after only six minutes. United could have evened things up when a defensive error presented Benji Symes with a good chance but his attempted chip was collected by the keeper. Sam Rimmer went close on two occasions but United were largely outplayed for most of the first half. Storrington pressed home their advantage on 37 minutes when the United defence failed to deal with a cross and Awcock tapped in at the far post.

The second half was an altogether different story. From the restart a typical flowing move finally saw Dom Bigg release Dickie Anderson who calmly placed the ball past the keeper into the far corner with his right foot. United then dominated a passage of play, which featured the introduction of Ian Rise. Rise's pace immediately troubled the Storrington defence and his pinpoint cross was smashed home by the grateful Rimmer. Rise then turned from provider to goal scorer, volleying home from close range on 74 minutes.

Storrington then took advantage of some casual defending and Ben Reilly fired home through a crowd of players leaving Cheek with no chance. Ashdown Hurrey Man of the Match Alex Page was outstanding at the heart of the United defence.
