Bexhill set sights high

BEXHILL cricket club captain Steve Phillimore insists that leaders Lewes Priory are beatable when the two clash tomorrow (Saturday).

Lewes were romping away with Sussex Division Two until they suffered a surprise defeat to Sidley last weekend. They have still retained their supremacy but the title race has been thrown wide open.

Lewes' strength lies in their two overseas-born players - Kashif Ibrahim and Imran Khan (although Ibrahim is now English-qualified) - who have blitzed almost everything that has stood in their way.

Second-from-bottom Bexhill are still smarting from a disappointing defeat to rock bottom Preston Nomads last weekend. But Phillimore remains in optimistic mood. He said: "Every team can beat everybody else in this league and I think it will remain a tight league. To have won that game (against Nomads) would have been perfect. We still played well for a lot of the game but mid-table is still a realistic target."

Phillimore, who is unavilable for the clash, is urging his batsmen to up their game from the abject collapse against Nomads. He said: "They are a good side. Kashif Ibrahim is the best bowler in the league and he took nine wickets against us last year. But Sidley batted first, got a low score and still beat them."
