Bexhill snap up Aussie spinner

AUSTRALIAN Bryce Turnbull will be Bexhill Cricket Club's overseas player for the coming Sussex Division Two season.

Turnbull, a leg spinner and middle-order batsman, is due to arrive in mid-April and comes with the recommendation of Tim Scott, a fellow Aussie who played for Bexhill a few years ago and is now a coach of Turnbull's at grade one outfit Kingborough Cricket Club in Tasmania.

Bexhill captain Steve Phillimore said: "We definitely wanted a bowler and we wanted an all-rounder. He plays in his side as a bowler and bats at number eight but Sam Roberts (who obliterated all manner of records two years ago) batted at 11 in his side. In an ideal world we would have liked a seamer but if he's a good spinner he'll take wickets and he's going to bowl about 15 overs every match."

Jason Wickenden and Hamish Russell are expected to return and Phillimore adds "we've still got a couple of irons in the fire" although university commitments will sideline Alan Cowley throughout the summer.

All are welcome to attend net sessions at Bexhill Leisure Centre on April 3 and April 10 (both Saturday) from 7-8pm. The East India Tandoori restaurant and Renown Travel have pledged their support for the new campaign.
