Bowlers so nearly passtheir tough testwith flying colours

A trip to the notoriously difficult King Alfred venue is always testing and although Wealden men bowlers eventually lost 103-127 in their Sussex League game, they made the hosts work hard.

A good start is even more important than usual on such a tricky carpet and the two Wealden rinks skipped by Mike Read and Alex Parsons pulled away from the off and held on to record well deserved victories. The team led by Tony Plater almost made it three wins out of the six but going into the last end one shot ahead, they just lost out to a measure on the last bowl and had to settle for a 17-17 draw.

The other three Wealden teams found the going tough and the match result was decided well before the end. But with King Alfred virtually invincible at home, Wealden will not be too disappointed with a points haul that means promotion hopes remain intact.
