Bowls tournament is a success

THE 2003 Bexhill Ladies' Open Bowls Tournament turned out to be a sweeping success at the Polegrove Greens.

The various finals were contested on Saturday and the winners had the pleasure of receiving their prizes from the chairman of the council Cllr Ron Parren.

No less than 160 players, many of whom have received county recognition, from as far afield as Norwich took part in what is widely acknowledged as one of the top events of its kind on the south coast. The action kicked-off on Monday when mayor Cllr Deirdre Williams bowled the first wood and despite the proliferation of outside talent on show, local players featured prominently at the presentation ceremony.

The Ladies' Singles (Herbert Cup) winner was Linda Nye (Sidley Martlets) while Joan Wells (Saffrons, Eastbourne) had to settle for the runner-up's Hollingdale Cup after a 21-12 defeat.

Mary Williams and Denise Hodd (both Polegrove Ladies) claimed the Ladies' Pairs crown after seeing off Joan Watt and Catherine Gray (both Fairlight) 26-7 in the final.

The host club was also represented in the final of the Bexhill Observer Mixed Pairs Cup although Doris Wickenden, who was a substitute for singles winner Nye, and partner Gordon Moore (Sidley Martlets) were on the wrong end of a 25-13 scoreline against Lorraine and Tom Hume (both Saffrons).

The Stevenson Cup for the player who progressed the furthest without winning a trophy was won by Ettie Perry (Polegrove Ladies) while the South Coast Dairies Cup was awarded to Mrs K. Allvey (Newick) for registering the most points against the champion. The 2004 version will run from July 26-31.
