BROWNE'S SIGNINGS HUNT

UNITED hope to move swiftly onward with their Division 1 campaign after their Saturday cup exit in which they outplayed United Association for much of the match but went out to an unfortunate solitary goal.

They go to Sidley United this Saturday with manager Ian Browne saying: "We're good enough to beat them but we've got to take on our responsibilities in our team roles because we haven't in our last two games.

"If the players need to keep trying to play good football and make good decisions, we'll be OK."

Browne is still not satisfied with his attack, which he thought significantly missed injured seven-goal Dave Schneider and outstanding left-winger Stuart Sell.

Possible signings this week were intended to strengthen and balance United's right flank and boost their central strike force.

Browne's assessment of Saturday's defeat: "I wasn't too disappointed with the way we played against Eastbourne UA: they had one shot against us and they didn't open us up or get behind us once. We were camped in their half and they couldn't get out."

The goal came in the 40th minute. An Eastbourne ball went over the head of sweeper Steve Pickles and when he let it run towards his keeper, Dean Fuller slipped and Scott McDonald capitalised easily.

Earlier neat play had given Paul Brown a United opening but his shot materialised too slowly. Later, forward Simon Hancock headed a free kick wide from four yards. Bif Shelley returned to the team after suspension and several promising balls crossed the Eastbourne box without a United finishing touch.
