Bailey latest star set for Wright’s benefit clash at Billingshurst

Australian cricketing legend George Bailey is the latest in a host of stars to sign up for a benefit match at Billingshurst Cricket Club this Sunday.

Sussex and England cricketer Luke Wright will be bringing a team, including Bailey, to the Jubilee Fields to play a fast and furious 25-over match against Billingshurst’s high-flying 1st XI as part of his benefit year.

Tasmanian-born Bailey has played five Tests, 28 T20s and 57 one-day international matches for Australia, while Wright, 29, is Sussex captain for this season’s T20 Blast and he has played more than 50 times for England in T20 cricket.

The Sussex side coming to Billingshurst will include many of the county’s top stars, who will warm up with an awesome display of power hitting in a range-hitting competition before the match begins.

Ex-England wicketkeeper Matt Prior will be on hand to give the Billingshurst team the benefit of his experience as he manages them for the day.

Club chairman Jim Burroughs said: “Billingshurst Cricket Club is looking forward to welcoming all the Sussex players and visitors to Jubilee Fields for what promises to be a really exciting day’s entertainment and fun for all the family.

“It’s a historic day for the club and a chance for all the local community to see some professional cricketers at their local ground.

“There is a lot of effort that goes into the day from everybody involved in the club from helpers to ground staff and I hope it will be a great success.”

Everyone is welcome at the ground for a family fun day which will be compered by BBC Match of the Day commentator Steve Wilson.

The match comes after Billingshurst successfully hosted a benefit game for Sussex player Mike Yardy last year.

The game will help raise money for Make a Wish UK, which grants magical wishes to children suffering life-threatening illnesses. Motor neurone disease charity The Broad Appeal will also benefit.

Spectators will also have the chance to meet the players and get autographs during the tea break.

There will be a barbecue, beer tent, Blue India curry stand and kids’ entertainment, while Sussex mascot Sid the Shark will also be on hand as well as live music after the match.

Gates open at Jubilee Fields at 11am with the match due to start at 1.30pm.

Prices for adults are £5, children under 16/ OAPs £2, a family of four £12, while parking costs £3.

The ticket includes a programme on entry.
