Dean Crawford picked up his third five-wicket haul of the season as Bexhill completed their third Sussex Premier League ‘double’ in 2015.

Bexhill won toss and batted on a dry, dusty wicket with a damp outfield. Once again they lost an early wicket before both Johnson brothers went to brilliant slip catches, Shawn for 14 and Malcolm for 34.

A couple of rash shots left Bexhill 98-5 before captain John Haffenden (46 in 81 balls with a six and four fours) and 15-year-old Ethan Guest (44 in 88 balls with five fours) dug in and battled their way to an 87-run partnership that swung the balance back to Bexhill.

Some sensible late batting by Cameron Burgon (20 not out) got Bexhill to a decent total of 218-9 on a helpful pitch for the bowlers.

With the travelling support including Bexhill legend Sam Roberts and the sun beating down, the Cuckfield bar tills were kept ringing.

Bexhill’s opening bowlers Crawford (5-36 off 12.1 overs) and Shawn Johnson (1-14 off eight) showed real pace, and soon had Cuckfield in trouble at 39-3.

Sussex professional Steffan Piolet (64 with two sixes and nine fours) took the attack to the Bexhill bowlers and was ably supported in a 85-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Marcus Campopiano (48 with one six and five fours).

At the second drinks break it looked like a level game, but Josh Beeslee got rid of Piolet with the second ball after drinks.

Ashar Zaidi (3-50 off 14 overs) and Crawford, back for his second spell, quickly rattled through the lower order as Cuckfield crumbled from 137-4 to 155 all out.

Standings (played 17 matches unless stated): 1 East Grinstead 407pts, 2 Roffey (16) 381, 3 Preston Nomads 363, 4 BEXHILL 335, 5 Horsham 314, 6 Billingshurst 257, 7 Middleton 256, 8 Cuckfield 248, 9 Eastbourne 248, 10 Brighton & Hove 232.
